چکیده

[1] We use lightning sferics from theWorldWide Lightning Location Network to identify storms near 362 Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes (TGFs). The combined spectrum of TGFs with storms within 300 km of the sub-satellite point is much harder than the spectrum of TGFs with more distant storms. When these data are compared with simulations of vertically oriented relativistic runaway breakdown, it is found that the most likely model has a source altitude of 15 km and a wide-beam geometry. We find four associations of TGFs with individual sferics geolocated to positions more than 300 km from the sub-satellite point and show that a narrow-beam source at 21 km altitude is unlikely to produce the number of high energy photons in these TGFs. Temporal and Spectral Properties of Gamma-Ray Flashes

The temporal and spectral properties of terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs) are studied. The delay of low energy photons relative to high energy ones in the γ-ray variations of the TGFs with high signal to noise ratio has been revealed by an approach of correlation analysis in the time domain on different time scales. The temporal structures of the TGFs in high energy band are usually narrower...

Properties of the thundercloud discharges responsible for terrestrial gammaray flashes

[1] The source of terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs) has been an active area of research since their discovery by Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory/Burst and Transient Source Experiment in 1994. These intense bursts of gamma rays originate within thunderclouds via the rapid production of relativistic runaway electrons, accelerated by thundercloud/lightning electric fields to multi-MeV energies. R...

Heliospheric Origin of Gamma-ray Bursts

Systematic variations of average observational characteristics and correlation properties between different parameters of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with time from 1991 April to 1994 September are revealed. It is hard to explain the observed long-term variability by variations of experimental conditions. The variability of GRB properties with the time scale of months to years, together with the si...

Production of terrestrial gamma-ray flashes by an electromagnetic pulse from a lightning return stroke

[1] Recent observations of terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs) (Smith et al., 2005) suggest the need for a new mechanism of TGF production. Consideration of relativistic runaway electron (RRE) avalanche driven by electromagnetic impulses (EMP) radiated by rapidly moving lightning return strokes indicates that TGFs can be produced by discharges with peak return stroke currents Ip > 450–700 kA w...
